Quobba Point

Between Exmouth and Carnarvon there are two stand out, beach front, farm stays that get a lot of airplay, Warroora Station and Quobba Station.  We looked at Warroora, but the long dirt road in with compulsory tyre deflation encouraged us to look further south and we decided Quobba Station as the easier option.  As luck would have it, a drop–in to the local Visitor Centre in Carnarvon enlightened us to Quobba Point Campground and the Quobba Blowhole.  This was an easy black-top cruise, with the option of driving the extra few k’s to Quobba Station if we got inspired.

We were beating into the wind all the way, and wow, it really punishes your fuel consumption.  I reckon there’s a 30% surge, compared with no breeze or a tail-wind.  The low off the coast had been pushing the ocean against the cliffs for days and the blowholes were putting on their best show when we arrived.

In spite of this impressive display, the highlight of our stop here was a guy in a coffee van set up complete with fresh doughnuts and take-away.  Clearly he has a captive and hungry audience, the blowholes being the closest tourist attraction to Carnarvon.

It’s a first in, best dressed at Quobba, which is why we got the early jump on Friday morning.  After we set up, we decided that we needed some down time, so we spent the next three days layin’ around, playing a LOT of Rummy-O and of course, waiting for the wind to die down.  We were keen to snorkel The Aquarium, a very shallow coral reef, protected from the swell by a small island.

Finally we had a gentle sea breeze and took to the water. It was different swimming parallel to the fish, instead of looking down on them, but I think we had been spoiled by our experience at the other end of Ningaloo Reef.

The Aquarium

We headed back to Carnarvon, with a tail wind this time and checked into a caravan park for a couple of days.  They DO come in handy for hair washing (her), laundry (me) and topping up the batteries.

Next stop?  Shark Bay and Monkey Mia
