Next morning, left the van early and headed back into Wilson’s Promontory. Yesterday was just a sliver of what The Prom has to offer, and I wanted at least one other perspective to share with you. It’s not all hill climbs and heart attacks. Lilly Pilly Gully sounded a mere stroll DOWN by comparison. A third of the distance in a quarter of the time sounded perfect after Mt. Oberon. It turned out to be a gateway to sub-tropical rainforest, sequestered from the elements by the towering cover of eucalypts.
Vic Parks had built a boardwalk around and through this refuge. Only the bird calls and a babbling brook broke the silence. It would be perfect for a hot summers day (not sure WHAT day that is on the east coast of Victoria). There are benches just to sit and breathe with just nature for company.
It’s hard sometimes to capture the vibe of a place in a photograph. Some places are just too big for an overall impression photo. This is just a sample.

And that was that. It’s a round trip walk back to the carpark, but I had been seduced by the strolling and I knew the rest of the track was somewhat more of a challenge. In the end, it was a fortuitous choice as a happened to glance down along the way to see these two little critters venturing out of their hidey hole to soak some some morning son.

Back at the van by 10am and soon heading for Pakenham. Only an hour from Melbourne, and, like Haley’s Comet, this is my perihelion. I have to start heading back to Bairnsdale to get the van into Jayco. It looks like I’ve got a campsite report in the next edition of On The Road RV’s national campsite guide. Due out mid December. Available in most newsagents, it’s actually easier to navigate than a lot of websites (and a lot more reliable).
